Vogue
"For four years I worked under contract for the magazine, and loved it. Each month there would be a conference with John Parsons and the fashion editors, where features would be allotted to photographers and artists. Sometimes I would get four pages, sometimes just a sketch for the Diary."

Cider with Rosie
"For some time I had been illustrating a series of poetry books for schools. Its editor was Ian Parsons, chairman of Chatto and Windus and the Hogarth Press. It was his idea that I should illustrate Laurie Lee's new book Cider with Rosie... The life he wrote of in his book, that of a boy growing up in the country, had affinities with my own childhood memories... The book succeeded beyond all expectations, some of its success rubbing off on me, with the result that I was more often referred to as an illustrator than as a painter."

H E Bates
"There were book illustrations, poorly paid but fun to do. Once I got a drawing for Keats' La Belle Dame Sans Merci mixed up with an ad for margerine, and to my delight both clients were highly delighted with their drawings, both writing to comment on the originality of my viewpoint."

Alphonse
John Ward illustrated this children's book written by his seventeen year old son George
